Introduction

Joe Robinson is a design guru with years of experience in driving innovation at leading organizations in Silicon Valley. From shifts in mainstream technologies to disruptive new innovations, Joe describes the current landscape of trends that are impacting tech product design.

The Next Wave of Tech Product Design

When I look at product design trends in the tech world, a number of changes stand out. First, we are seeing a rapid evolution of existing technologies. In addition, there is an influx of new technologies that are disrupting how we get things done. Furthermore, there’s greater access to emerging technologies than ever before. For example, think about how easy it is to get a drone for personal use.

When you look at macro-trends, there’s been a lot of focus on driving simplicity in product design. Within the app world, it’s very difficult for your product to stand out. As a result, developers are creating apps that have a very specific use case. Most importantly, all of these apps make the user experience as easy as possible. Simply put, every new innovation is being purpose-built with specific tasks in mind.

In addition, wearable technology is becoming the new standard for mobile product design. I think it’s safe to say that the first generation of smartwatches left a lot to be desired. However, these early designs provide us with validation on a lot of features that will continue to improve. For example, the ability to receive app-based notifications and the use of physical gestures to accomplish tasks. Over time, the next wave of wearables will continue to enhance interactivity with users and mobile products.

Finally, new tech innovations are changing the financial world. Through the years, many finance-based services and processes have moved online. However, the ability to exchange money digitally is an emerging service that will continue to expand. For example, you don’t need to go to a bank in order to pay someone for goods or services on demand. Instead, you can use mobile payment apps or digital currency to complete transactions.

Ultimately, digital product design innovation will continue to enhance our daily interactions.
