Products That Count, Editor
AdministratorThis eBook includes tips that product leaders can put into action right now to help establish a great product culture. How do you establish that culture? A good place to start is with proper motivation.
According to the entrepreneurs Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor, there are three pillars of what motivates people. The first of these is play: having fun in what an employee is doing in their role. The second is purpose: a person feels like their work is meaningful. The third is potential: a feeling that there is an opportunity for growth and advancement in one’s life and career.
Understanding human motivation and psychology at this level is especially important for product teams. A sense of play is critical because PMs have to deal with so many different constituents that sometimes, the sheer amount of tasks, projects, and priorities can be overwhelming; keeping a sense of fun is important because product management brings innovation into corporations and delivers value to customers. In terms of purpose, building a better world is a strong value for product managers. Lastly, activating the power of potential is key because PMs are, in general, very ambitious. The more product leaders can encourage and harness that ambition, the greater the opportunities will be for PMs — and for the business, too.
As product leaders, it is our job to build a great product culture. Doing so helps us in so many ways. For one, it combats ineffective product management. For another, it helps reduce churn, especially important in the wake of the Great Resignation. And in general, it helps the people we work with have the opportunity to grow into their best selves.
